Just a quick (and quite late) favourites post for October, as for about two weeks of it I was on holiday in New York City! If you’d like to see what I got up to over those two weeks, feel free to check out my On Location posts, where I tracked down some awesome film locations and posted some pictures of them. I feel pretty proud of being able to find so many cool things so I suppose that’s a favourite for October as well.

Back in August, the winner of Shitfest Summer was one of my favourites, but this month the post at Isaacs Picture Conclusions where Abbi introduces us to her shiny trophy Liz is one of my favourites. I probably shouldn’t enjoy a post so much when its focus is clearly possessed by a demon, but what can you do.

Meanwhile, over at Cinema Parrot Disco, Eric’s ‘review’ of Let the Right One In (2008) was also a favourite, especially considering that that film was one of my favourites of that year. If you ever wanted to know what some famous and influential vampires thought of a very good vampire film, this post is all you need.

Cara of Silver Screen Serenade celebrated ladies in horror films with her top 10 list of horror movie heroines, which I loved. And there’s no better month than October for a celebration of some really spooky films as well.

I honestly don’t really think about James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) that much, which is why I really enjoyed this extremely detailed post at Deja Reviewer, providing examples of how the film is actually symmetrical. I love things like this because they show how a really familiar film can become unfamiliar and a bit more special.

If you work with children who have experienced tragedy or are growing up in less than ideal circumstances, you may know that sometimes it’s extremely difficult to communicate the concept of death and its permanency with them, particularly with younger children. This is where Alina’s post at Literary Vittles on three childrens’ books that explore the concept of death is so useful and interesting. Some of the art in these childrens’ books is really lovely as well, which is a strange dichotomy. Pretty amazing stuff.

Just in case you needed more evidence that Sati of Cinematic Corner is a total badass, check out her takedown post exploring and analysing the misogynistic reactions that some had to Gone Girl (2014), and the misunderstandings about its female lead. So awesome.

I remember when I saw Babel (2006) for the first time, my mind was totally blown and I wasn’t able to really contain it. Hence another favourite of mine this month was another anatomy post on this grand film, at Writer Loves Movies. By breaking the film down into its themes and discussing them, Babel is a bit more easy to digest and is more beautiful as a result.

Unfortunately this is a pretty small post given the lack of time I had to explore the internet and be a good blog reader during the month of October, but I hope you’ve enjoyed these posts as much as I did. Hopefully this will change this month however I have been spending way too much time watching that stupid ‘Too Many Cooks’ video, and I finally got back into The Walking Dead, so we’ll see how we go!
