April 2016 Favourites

fav-apr2016April was another quiet month here at Film Grimoire, but I like to think of it as having a nice rest before Game of Thones starts and I type my fingers into oblivion as I rant about the episodes forever and ever. April was a pretty amazing month in terms of not just Game of Thrones returning, but also the fact that myself and my partner got engaged! (This guy.) Neither of us particularly enjoy weddings though so I’m not quite sure how that’s going to happen.

Anyway, here are some posts that I absolutely loved this month!

John Michael of The Sixth Station keeps knocking it out of the park with beautiful posts. His posts on Under the Skin and It Follows, and on stumbling upon films that just seem made for you, were wonderful.

One of my favourite things in the entire world is this techno remix of Christian Bale yelling at a lighting technician (there’s swearing in that, just in case you’re not a fan). It was such a happy surprise to see that Emma of emmakwall (knows it all) and Jake of That Other Critic collaborated on a hilarious post about Bale’s freak out, the general failure ofΒ Terminator: SalvationΒ (2009), and the cultural significance of Bale’s rant. So good.

One film that I loved so very much this month was The Witch (2016). Sati of Cinematic Corner wrote a most delicious review of the film, as did JW of Film and Nuance.

Alina of Literary Vittles shared some beautiful photos and tales of her hiking adventures at Tunnel Falls. It is said that hiking around waterfalls reminds you of how insignificant your own little life is in the grand scheme of things. Alina’s nature posts always inspire me to get out and see more of the landscape where I live.

Brian of Hard Ticket to Home Video wrote a post this month that I think everyone can relate to – an analysis of the reasons why the son in Hook (1991) is the absolute worst, as evidenced by the scene in the film where he’s chucking a baseball around in an airplane. The absolute worst. That scene always makes me feel super anxious and it only serves to make the kid look annoying.

  1. Congratulations Anna and fiance!! That is such lovely news, I’m very pleased for you both. Now be honest….what’s more exciting – GoT returning or your engagement….? Only kidding of course πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for the shout out! I LOVED that remix ha ha πŸ™‚ we are totally on the same wavelength on this one!!! I know some people don’t see why it’s funny or interesting but some of us DO get it πŸ™‚ I love sharing things like this with other people who think in a similar way hee hee.

I also loved JW’s The Witch review, I must read Sati’s as well and have JUST opened up Brian’s “Hook” post on another tab….this sounds….hilarious πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you Emma! πŸ˜€ I’m pretty excited! (For both! Haha!)

I honestly think it takes an especially wonderful person to have such a good sense of the ridiculous and to find absurd pop culture moments like Bale’s lighting rant funny, even years on. Such a classic moment in Bale movie history, and the remix is still my favourite thing ever. Plus the guy who did that remix went on to mix all of RuPaul’s albums and have a pretty frequent role in the music challenges on RuPaul’s Drag Race, if you watch it!

  2. Congratulations on your Engagement! 😊

    1. Thank you! πŸ˜€ It’s pretty exciting!

  3. Incredible!
I started blogging this past month, and it is a pleasure that I came across your blog.

  4. Congratulations on your engagement! He’s quite the hunk too! I’m slightly disappointed as I thought we could have been a celebrity movie blogging couple. Oh well I’m still happy for you πŸ˜€

Thanks for the mention, I have to admit I was pretty drunk at the time but she was really nice.

    1. Haha! Thanks Mikey! πŸ˜€ Alas, ’twas not to be… however I will always be jealous of your interviewing skills whilst a tad drunk. I don’t think I could interview anyone after just one beer.

  5. Very cool to hear about your engagement A Big congrats to you and yours. I hated The Witch but understand why many thought it was great. Those links you posted look great., will check em out ASAP

  9. First off, congratulations! That’s wonderful news. And thank you for featuring two of my posts!

    1. Thanks so much! πŸ˜€ Loved those posts. Was a little bit late on the Under the Skin and It Follows one, but since I read it in April I had to include it in this month’s post for sure!

  10. Aww congratulations! I’m getting married myself at the end of the month, and honestly, all traditions can be thrown out of the window, so plan a day that you and your other half will enjoy and remember for the rest of your lives πŸ™‚
    – Allie

    1. Thanks so much Allie! πŸ˜€ Honestly, I would get married with approximately five people at the ceremony if I could. Or maybe one big party where we just so happen to get married, rather than having an actual wedding! I like the idea of planning something to just enjoy, rather than matching convention. All the best for your wedding later in the month! πŸ™‚

  11. Thank you so much for both links! And congrats on the engagement – your fiance is very handsome! πŸ˜€

    1. Haha, thanks Sati! πŸ˜€ He’s a pretty top notch human being!

  12. Congrats Anna πŸ™‚ Some very interesting links too, cheers!

    1. Thanks heaps Jordan! πŸ˜€

  15. congrats on getting engaged to the James Bond lookalike πŸ™‚

Now I know why you have only been around sporadically πŸ™‚

    1. Haha, thanks Rob! πŸ˜€

  16. Huge congratulations!! So does this mean that you’ll be buying a house pretty soon, too??

Thank you for the mention, and although I thought The Witch was pretty strange while I was watching it, I’ve liked it more and more ever since. Not surprised that we agree, as usual. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Alina! πŸ˜€ Still looking for a house, no luck yet but my fingers are perpetually crossed. The housing market here continues to be absolutely ridiculous! Maybe this year is the year though!

  17. Awesome round up!

    1. Thanks Abbi! πŸ˜€

  18. Eeeeep, congratulations on the engagement! If you both aren’t big on weddings, just stick to what YOU GUYS want. Great round up, too πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks so much Zoe! πŸ˜€ We have plans around making the whole thing the least wedding-y as is possible. Will it work out? Only time shall tell!!

  19. Congratulations on the engagement!
    Cheers! to th happy couple

    1. Thanks so much! πŸ˜€
