February 2017 Favourites

fav-feb2017Happy March everyone! Hope everyone has had a fantastic year thus far. It seems like the year is going by far too fast, but I always seem to say the same thing around this time of year. Easter will be around the corner any day now.

I picked up my university study again in February, as I am more determined than ever to finish my Master’s degree that I started approximately one millennia ago. Please do wish me luck, as now I’m studying, working full time, enjoying a social life, and also attempting to re-engage my creative ability to write! Juggling study, work, life and hobbies is a tough one. And planning a wedding. As a result, I haven’t had any time to read any of the amazing things my friends here on WordPress and beyond have written, which I actually find really sad.

Anyway, without further ado, here are a couple of things I’ve been enjoying this month.

twinpeaks

This month I’ve been rewatching my favourite television show of all time – Twin Peaks. I love Twin Peaks more than anything in the world, quite possibly more than Game of Thrones (if that can be believed, considering how much I rant about that show here). Rewatching seasons one and two of Twin Peaks is not only an exciting and inspiring activity for me, but it’s also in preparation for season three of the show which is due to air on May 21st this year. I am so psyched for the new season, it’s not even funny. But at the same time, I am keenly aware of possibly jumping on the hype train and eventually being disappointed. Anyway, regardless of any possible hesitation regarding season three, rewatching Twin Peaks has been one of my favourite things this month.

You know what else has been amazing this month? It was announced that another film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel Dune is being made. Reports indicate that the film will be directed by the supremely talented Denis Villeneuve. Which is amazing, because Villeneuve is responsible for not only the Oscar nominated sci fi Arrival (2016), but also the remake of Blade Runner (1982), titled Blade Runner 2049, which is due to be released later this year (and also looks absolutely beautiful, per the teaser trailer). I absolutely love the Dune novels by Frank Herbert, and I have a bit of a soft spot for David Lynch’s film adaptation of the novel as well, even though it is almost universally panned. It’s exciting to think that the series might be getting another adaptation that is a bit more audience-friendly. Makes me want to read the books again.

I am so stoked that Moonlight won the Oscar for Best Feature Film. As I mentioned in my brief review of the film, I was completely enchanted and impressed by it. Although, I do feel slightly bitter regarding the fuss around the mistaken win of La La Land (which I still haven’t seen) potentially overshadowing Moonlight‘s triumph. Moonlight is a film that 100% deserved this win, and it’s a must see. I was and am so excited to see a film that explores so many complex, relevant and supremely important themes win an award of this calibre.

Lastly (but not least), my partner’s film Winter at Westbeth will be shown on Australian television screens later this month! Tune in to ABC on March 12th, at 10pm. If you’re in Australia, you can’t miss it. The film had a very successful run at Cinema Nova in Carlton (Melbourne), and in cinemas throughout the country during February, which was amazing. It’s a total headspin to think the film is a real thing that many people are seeing and enjoying. Every time I see it, I catch something new and inspiring. Winter at Westbeth is highly recommended viewing.

That’s just about it for me this month. What did you enjoy during the month of February? What should I check out? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Twin Peaks was amazing. Good luck with your studies.

  2. I’m wishing you the best of luck.

  3. Good luck with the studying. I am also a part time student, and balancing a social life, work, relationships, eating, sleeping and writing is quite the challenge.

I am seeing Denis Villeneuve everywhere right now. My father was a huge fan of Dune, so it is great news that a capable director is taking this on. I can’t wait to see it!

  4. You’re busy. Good luck with everything. You can do it!

  5. Good luck with your Master’s. And Moonlight was amazing.

  6. Good luck with your studies! I’ve heard so many good things about Twin Peaks…I guess I know what TV show to binge on next 🙂

  7. I too was a little peeved about the Oscar mixup…not because it wasn’t totally satisfying to have La La Land leave the stage, but because the cast and crew of Moonlight didn’t fully get all their spotlight time. I would have loved to have heard Barry Jenkins’ full acceptance speech. Their natural reactions to the mixup were so adorable…they were floored!

  8. So excited that Moonlight won 🙂
Finished watching both seasons of Twin Peaks not long ago, and boy was it bizarre. Sometimes I found it hilarious and sometimes (most of the time) it drove me absolutely crazy. Many of the small-town elements can be found here in Portland, believe it or not. And the interior of the Timberline Lodge looks just like Audrey’s hotel.

  9. wow. glad to hear things r keeping u busy Anna. Hope all is well

btw, did u get my email about my upcoming movies from the hat? Im closing the list quite soon.
